The AMF certification remains the mandatory gateway to advising on or selling financial products in France. Its format is not daunting, but two parameters keep catching firms out: the pass threshold, which applies category by category, and the Sustainable Finance module, often treated as an optional extra when it is nothing of the sort.
What the certification requires
Issued by the Autorité des marchés financiers, the certification attests to the minimum regulatory knowledge required to practise. Its scope is broad: client advisers, portfolio managers, financial analysts, investment advisers.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Format | 120 multiple-choice questions |
| Pass threshold | 80 % correct in each category |
| Categories assessed | Financial literacy and core competencies |
| Deadline after taking up the role | 6 months (decree of 30 January 2009) |
| Additional module | Sustainable Finance, mandatory since 2022 |
| Accredited providers | Around fifteen in 2026 |
| Typical preparation | 2 to 5 days |
The threshold is the most commonly misunderstood point. It is not a matter of scoring 80 % overall: that level must be reached in each category. A candidate who is strong on financial literacy but weak on core competencies fails, even with a comfortable overall average.
The Sustainable Finance module is not optional
Since 2022, an additional Sustainable Finance certification applies to advisers who market financial products. It is the single largest source of compliance delays, for a simple reason: it was introduced after the core certification, and many firms’ HR processes were never updated to fold it into the onboarding pathway.
The result shows up at audit: staff certified for years, entirely in order on the core exam, but missing the supplement required for what they actually sell.
Points to watch
- The six-month clock starts when the person takes up the role, not on the administrative hiring date nor at the end of the probation period.
- Check that the provider is accredited. Only around fifteen bodies hold accreditation in 2026 — ESBanque, First Finance, Lefebvre Dalloz, AFG Formation, CNAM and IPAC France among them. A non-accredited course does not deliver the certification.
- Two to five days of preparation is not two to five days of availability. Failures almost always trace back to preparation compressed into too short a window.
- Map the populations concerned. Internal mobility regularly creates situations where someone performs a certifiable activity without having been identified as such.
What this means for you
- Cross-check your certification register against actual job content, not against theoretical job titles: that is where the gaps sit.
- Build the Sustainable Finance module into standard onboarding instead of treating it as an annual catch-up session.
- Set an alert at four months after each relevant appointment, to keep two months of margin before the regulatory deadline.
